Designs and prepares specifications for chemical process systems and the construction and operation of commercial-scale chemical plants, and supervises industrial processing and fabrication of products undergoing physical and chemical changes.

Two phrases carry weight. “Designs and prepares specifications” — the emphasis is on design authority, not operation. And “commercial-scale” — bench and pilot work counts, but an assessor wants to see you working at or toward production scale.

The unit group tasks give you the fuller picture: designing process systems and control schemes for separation, reaction, heat transfer and materials handling; monitoring equipment operation for efficiency under safe conditions; diagnosing plant malfunctions and instituting remedial action; and studying product utilisation and pollution control problems.

233111 or 233112? Where chemical ends and materials begins

Chemical Engineer shares Unit Group 2331 with 233112 Materials Engineer, defined as investigating the properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and other materials and developing their engineering and commercial applications.

The test is what you are engineering. If your object is a process — a reaction, a separation, a heat and mass balance, a plant — you are 233111. If your object is a material — its microstructure, failure behaviour, formulation, selection for an application — you are 233112. Polymer processing and metallurgical work sit in genuinely grey territory; choose based on where your technical decisions were made and keep all three episodes consistent with that choice.

The evidence chemical engineering assessors look for

Chemical engineering has an unusually clear evidence trail, and applicants routinely leave it out. Numbers are your friend here in a way they are not in every discipline.

  • Mass and energy balances you closed, with the basis stated
  • Design conditions and margins you set, and the reasoning
  • Codes and standards applied — AS, ASME, API, TEMA, IEC 61511 — and why that one
  • Process safety — your specific contribution to HAZOP, LOPA, SIL determination or relief sizing
  • Simulation work — the model you built, the thermodynamic package you selected and the reason, and how you validated it against plant data

That last point separates strong reports from average ones. “I modelled the column in Aspen” is weak. “I selected NRTL over Peng-Robinson because the system was strongly non-ideal at operating pressure, then validated the model against six months of DCS data and found the tray efficiency assumption was 12 per cent optimistic” is competency.

Close with what happened — commissioning performance against design, and what you would change.

This is the strongest episode type for 233111 because it demonstrates design authority end to end.

2. A process safety or troubleshooting investigation

A relief system review, a HAZOP action you closed out, a recurring plant upset you diagnosed, an environmental compliance problem you solved. The structure that works is diagnostic: symptom, hypotheses, how you designed the tests that discriminated between them, what the data showed, the change you made, and the measured result.

Be precise about your own role. HAZOPs are team exercises and assessors know it. “I facilitated the node covering the reactor feed system and personally developed the recommendation for a high-temperature interlock” is credible. “I led the HAZOP” when you were a scribe is not.

3. An optimisation or debottlenecking project

Yield improvement, energy reduction, throughput increase, catalyst life extension, solvent recovery. These episodes carry natural quantification, which is exactly what a summary statement needs to cross-reference against. State the baseline, your intervention, the result and how you verified it was your change rather than normal variation.

Pinch analysis, statistical process control and designed experiments all read well here, provided you show the reasoning rather than naming the technique.

What gets chemical engineer CDRs rejected

  • Operations described as design. Running a plant competently is valuable work but it is not what 233111 is defined as. If your recent role is operational, reach back to project work for at least two of your episodes.
  • Missing units and basis. A flow rate without units or a conversion without a basis undermines every other technical claim in the episode.
  • Safety treated as a footnote. Process safety is central to chemical engineering practice and its absence is conspicuous.
  • Team work written as “we”. The report assesses you individually. First person singular throughout.
  • Copied sample content. Engineers Australia screens for plagiarism. Chemical engineering samples circulate widely online and are among the most heavily flagged.

Your three episodes need to map cleanly onto the Professional Engineer competency elements in the summary statement. Write the episodes first, then build the cross-reference table and check for gaps — if an element has no paragraph behind it, you need to go back and add evidence rather than assert the competency.
